Percentages in Excel: Six Formulas for Six Different Questions

Is 45 what percent of 300, how do you raise a price by 15%, how much did a figure grow? Each question wants its own formula, and each one is written out here.

Recommended next step in this suite:

Your manager asks "how much did spending rise over last quarter" and you wonder whether to divide by the new figure or the old one. The result shows 0.27 and you cannot tell whether that is 27% or a mistake.

How to use Percentage Formula step by step

1

1. Pick the question

Share of a total, X% of an amount, an increase, a discount, change between two values, or the total behind a part and its percentage.

2

2. Give the cells and the percentage

Type the percentage without the sign: the tool puts it where it belongs inside the formula.

3

3. Copy it and apply the Percentage format

Paste the formula and, if the result is a ratio, apply the Percentage format to the cell so 0.15 reads as 15%.

The Step Count: Traditional Friction vs. KorexTools

Trying divisions until the number looks sensible (4 steps)

  1. Divide what looks like the part by what looks like the total.
  2. See 0.27 and doubt it.
  3. Multiply by a hundred by hand and lose the format.
  4. Do it again in every column of the report.

With the KorexTools “Percentage Formula” builder (3 steps)

  1. Pick the percentage question.
  2. Point to the cells.
  3. Copy the formula and apply the Percentage format.

Why percentages in Excel go wrong even when the formula is typed correctly

Excel stores 15% as 0.15 and only shows the sign when the cell has the Percentage format. That double life lies behind most odd results: a division that comes out as 0.15 when you expected 15, or a 1500% because the value was already a percentage and got multiplied by a hundred again.

The tool writes six formulas with the right structure for each question, the change formula included, where the order of the two values flips the sign of the answer. The percentage goes in with its sign, which Excel reads as one hundredth, so you never mix decimals with manual divisions by a hundred.

Which formula belongs to which question

  • •"What percent is this?": divide the part by the total and apply the Percentage format.
  • •"Raise it by 15%": multiply by one plus the percentage rather than adding the 15% separately.
  • •"How much did it grow?": subtract the old value from the new and divide by the old one, never by the new.

Six questions, six structures

QuestionSample formulaWith 200 and 15%
15% of an amount=A2*15%30

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • ⚠️Typing 15% in the box, sign included, and doubling the calculation.
  • ⚠️Adding the 15% in a separate cell instead of multiplying by 1.15.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the result show 0.15 instead of 15%?

The formula is fine; the format is missing. Select the cell and apply the Percentage format from the Home tab.

Should I type 15 or 0.15 in the percentage box?

Type 15, without a sign. The tool turns it into 15% inside the formula and Excel reads it as 0.15.

How do I get the change when the previous value is zero?

Dividing by zero returns #DIV/0!. Wrap the formula in IFERROR, or first decide what to display when there is no baseline to compare with.

How do I add percentages in Excel?

If they sit in cells with percentage format, add them with SUM like any number, and the total can pass 100% without being an error. If you need each part’s weight, use the “What percentage a part is of the total” option.

How do I calculate the percentage increase between two years or two prices?

Choose the percentage change: subtract the starting value from the final one and divide by the starting one. It comes out positive on a rise and negative on a fall; give the cell percentage format to see it as 12%.

How do I work out a pass rate or an attendance percentage?

Use the “What percentage a part is of the total” option: put the qualifying rows, counted with COUNTIF, in the part and the number of rows in the total. Divide and format the result as a percentage.

How do I calculate profit margin as a percentage?

Margin is profit over selling price: use the part-of-total option with price minus cost as the part and the price as the total. For the markup on cost, use the change from cost to price.
