Rounding in Excel: Eight Formulas Depending on How You Want to Cut the Number

To the nearest, always up, to multiples of 0.05 or 1,000, or simply by dropping decimals. Choose the mode and copy the formula with your cell.

Recommended next step in this suite:

You prepare an invoice with tax and the total you see is a cent away from what the client gets on a calculator. Cell formatting hid decimals that the sum still carried.

How to use Round Formula step by step

1

1. Pick the kind of rounding

To the nearest, up, down, to a multiple or cutting decimals without rounding.

2

2. Enter the number and the decimals

It can be a cell, a value or a calculation such as A2*1.19. A negative number rounds to tens, hundreds or thousands.

3

3. Copy and drag

Paste the formula beside the original value and drag it down the column. The value really changes, not just what you see.

The Step Count: Traditional Friction vs. KorexTools

Rounding with formatting and checking on a calculator (4 steps)

  1. Remove decimals with the format button.
  2. Add up the column and read a total.
  3. Type the same numbers into a calculator.
  4. Discover the one-cent gap.

With the KorexTools “Round Formula” builder (3 steps)

  1. Choose the kind of rounding.
  2. Type the cell and the decimals.
  3. Copy the formula and drag.

Rounding the value is not the same as rounding what you see

When you reduce decimals through cell formatting, the stored number stays complete: a column total can differ by a cent from what the screen suggests. With ROUND the value genuinely changes, which matters on invoices, taxes and any total someone will recheck on a calculator.

Each variant has a specific job. ROUNDUP suits prices that must never fall short, ROUNDDOWN whole stock quantities, MROUND pushes amounts onto multiples of 5 or 0.05, and TRUNC cuts without looking at the next digit.

Which one fits which case

  • •Invoices and taxes: ROUND to 2 decimals.
  • •Prices on a 5-cent multiple: MROUND with 0.05.
  • •Whole boxes required: ROUNDUP to 0 decimals.

RoundingFormulaResult
Nearest, 2 decimals=ROUND(A2,2)1.23
Up, 2 decimals=ROUNDUP(A2,2)1.24
To a multiple of 0.05=MROUND(A2,0.05)1.25

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • ⚠️Using INT on negatives expecting it to cut toward zero.
  • ⚠️Rounding with cell format and believing the value already changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I round to thousands?

Use a negative number of decimals: with -3, the value 12,480 becomes 12,000. With -2 it rounds to hundreds and with -1 to tens.

What is the difference between TRUNC and INT?

With positives they match. With negatives, TRUNC(-3.7) gives -3 and INT(-3.7) gives -4, because INT always steps down to the lower integer.

Why does MROUND return an error?

It fails when the number and the multiple have different signs. Use the same sign on both or apply ABS to the number before rounding.
